Gustavo Venturelli

Postdoctoral Researcher at Federal University of Santa Catarina

I am a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Sociology and Political Science at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) and an incoming Assistant Professor at Stetson University. I’m also a researcher affiliated with ReDem. Before joining UFSC, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Central European University and a Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science at Skidmore College. Previously, I received my PhD from the University of São Paulo.

My research focuses on populism and democratic backsliding in Latin America. I address the causes, nature, and consequences of populism by focusing on public opinion surveys, political speeches, election manifestos, social media, and levels of democracy. I rely on text-as-data analysis and causal inference applications to investigate these topics. Beyond my immediate interests, I am also engaged in research collaborations on polarization, elections and electoral distrust, partisanship and political parties, and legislative studies.

I am originally from Southern Brazil. In my free time, I play instruments in Fantasma and guitar/sing in Gerinc.
